Every model of the current MacBook Pro 15 is a powerful multimedia notebook. All SKUs are equipped with 16 GB RAM and PCIe-SSDs, only the capacity differs from 256 GB up to 2 TB. Users can only customize the quad-core processor as well as the graphics card. Our test model is the mainstream spec, which retails for $2799 in Apple’s online store. This model includes a 512 GB SSD and the slightly faster CPU/GPU combination ( Core i7-6820HQ and AMD Radeon Pro 455 ).
If you’re not an Apple adherent, the 2017 Dell XPS 15 Touch is pretty slick in its own right, and is simply faster and more fully featured, only lacking in battery life comparatively. It costs significantly less as tested, and on top of that, delivers a superior graphics card, display, and port selection, and thus remains our Editors’ Choice for high-end desktop-replacement laptops.
Mac gamers will be happy with the graphics and processor. Graphics are fluid and the display is true to color. We played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the MacBook Pro and found that the graphics were very good and the computer handled everything fluidly. It did tax the system , causing the fans to start whirring in the background and the aluminum case did get slightly warmer, but the MacBook Pro performed well. Playing a game like that with a trackpad is not much fun, so get an external mouse. If you do, you will enjoy this and many other games on the MacBook Pro.
AMD’s Radeon Pro 455 is a mainstream graphics card based on the Polaris architecture. Contrary to the fastest model from the series, the Radeon Pro 460 , you only get 786 of the full 1024 shaders and the core clock of the Polaris 11 chip (14 nm) is a bit lower as well at 855 MHz. The memory equipment is similar to the base model of the MBP 15 at 2 GB GDDR5-VRAM (128-bit). The performance of the Radeon Pro 455 should be somewhere between the other two available GPUs.
Packing an AMD Radeon R9 M370X GPU, the newest 15-inch MacBook Pro is designed to deliver 80 times the graphics performance as last year’s model. A lower-cost configuration with integrated Intel Iris Pro graphics is also available. Our AMD-powered unit certainly doesn’t disappoint; 3D titles rendered instantly in Final Cut Pro, allowing me to preview them as soon as I dropped them into a video. Apple MacBook Pro MLH42LL/A 15-inch Laptop with Touch Bar, 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 512GB, Retina Display, Space Gray (Discontinued by Manufacturer)
It’s excellent news that Apple has moved to the seventh generation Intel Kaby Lake processors, we are also pleased to see new graphics cards. Performance is outstanding. The 15-inch MacBook Pro would still benefit from a few other pro features, a 4K display for one, 32GB RAM being another. Yet at the already high price point, Apple may well be saving us from staring down a $1,800+ buying decision. For now, this is the best MacBook Pro but it comes at a cost that alienates new users and with ports that may frustrate pro users.
